Simple Ways I Made My NYC Bedroom Feel Calm and Cozy

Updated: Jan 13, 2022

Painting walls a lighter color and adding built-in shelves can certainly add depth and give a homey feel to an apartment. But, I'm not one to make semi-permanent changes to a place I'm living in for one, maybe two years (if I'm lucky).

What I do is find super easy (and lazy) ways to make my NYC bedroom feel calm and cozy.

1. Sheer white cloth curtains to invite the sunlight in while still providing privacy. I like to tie them in a knot at the bottom, creating a soft swoop letting even more light in.

2. Green plants to provide some cleaner air and a sense of liveliness.

3. Color code my favorite books making my makeshift bookshelf seem less cluttered.

4. Full-length mirror so it's easier to choose outfits and makes the room feel bigger.

5. Decorative rug to connect the different pieces of furniture.

6. Neutral colored furniture to go with a natural aesthetic.

7. Black and white maps of my favorite places reminding me of home or somewhere meaningful. Mine are New York and Dublin.

8. Vintage record vinyls showcasing my parents' favorite music.

9. White down comforter to snuggle in.

10. Abstract pillows: I tend to choose warm toned pillows.

11. Framed photographs of my own photos of my favorite places I've travelled.

As you can see, creating a calm and cozy bedroom in NYC doesn't have to be costly or take a lot of time. I just focused on white and neutral toned furniture with pops of warm color. I selected pieces that were personal to me, but ones that anyone would appreciate, from the maps of my two favorite places, to my own photographs, to my parents' record vinyls.
